WASHINGTON - A HOUSE committee voted on Wednesday to give the government the right to dismantle financial firms that are so big, interconnected and leveraged that they could harm the US economy, even if they are healthy.
Voting along party lines, the House Financial Services Committee modified a sweeping financial regulation bill to give broad new power to a proposed Financial Services Oversight Council that would monitor risk across the financial system.
The provision, proposed by Rep. Paul Kanjorski, a Democrt, was staunchly opposed by Wall Street because it would let the government break apart firms even if they were sound and well-capitalized.
'No firm should be considered to be too big to fail,'' Mr Kanjorski said in a statement. 'Financial firms that want to play in a casino need to have their own resources to cover their bets and not assume that tax dollars are available in reserve if their bets fail.'
The amendment approved on Wednesday says the government could intervene when a firm presents a 'grave threat' to the financial system - a higher bar than what many large financial institutions thought Mr Kanjorski would set.
The legislation also would take into account a number of factors for breaking up a firm. In addition to size, the council would also have to consider the 'scope, scale, exposure, leverage, interconnectedness of financial activities.' 'This is more moderate than other approaches out there, but we still oppose it,' said Scott Talbott, a senior lobbyist for the Financial Services Roundtable, which represents institutions that could be affected by the legislation. -- AP

LONDON - A BRITISH man on the run from police sent a picture of himself to his local paper because he disliked the mugshot they had printed of him as part of a public appeal to track him down.
South Wales Police had issued media with the photo of Matthew Maynard, wanted by officers investigating a house burglary, as part of a crackdown on crime in Swansea.
When it appeared in the South Wales Evening Post, the 23-year-old sent the newspaper a replacement photo of himself standing in front of a police van.
They obligingly printed it on the front page.
The police thanked him for helping them in their appeal, saying: 'Everyone in Swansea will know what he looks like now.' -- REUTERS

CONCORD (New Hampshire) - THE bouncing mega-meatball record has landed in the East Coast.
Matthew Mitnitsky, owner of Nonni's Italian Eatery in Concord, said on Sunday that a 222.5-pound (101-kilogram) meatball was authenticated as the world's largest after being weighed by state weights and measures officials.
A Guinness Book of World Records official confirmed the big meatball as a record breaker and presented Mitnitsky with a plaque.
The old record of 198.6 pounds (90 kilograms) was set just over a month ago after Los Angeles-based talk show host Jimmy Kimmel vowed to beat a record set in Mexico. That record - 109 pounds (50 kilograms) - was set in August.
Mr Mitnitsky said he got involved 'to bring the meatball back to the East Coast because that's where it originated.' -- AP
