Ladies, this was what we went through in the Army; some experience tougher, some experience easier camps. And this is the most basic camp of all.
Q: Why soldiers are never good economists?
A: The latter make assumptions to simplify the complex world into workable models while the former kana *toot* when making one.

Those who were from the same camp with me should see some familiar faces.

After 24 hours of rain, sun and night, Kar Seng is still going strong. Hopefully I would not have to post a picture with his face crossed out soon. Jia you!!
Update: Found this picture in facebook . Looks like he has a good position.

SAF new combat uniform | |
| |
SINGAPORE: Singapore's men in green will be seeing a new combat uniform from next year.
Some 300,000 servicemen will eventually be wearing the new SAF combat uniform with high-tech pixelised patterns on it. The patterns replace the large green patches on the old outfit.
The new material maintains the camouflage effect even when viewed through night vision devices.
It is also designed to be used in war zones that extend beyond the jungle.
Colonel Tan Chor Kiat, Chief of Staff, HQ 9 Division, Infantry, Singapore Armed Forces, said: "When you talk about urban terrain, you are really looking at a very unique characteristic where the opposing forces can co-exist within the same urban terrain in a very volatile system.
"Consequently, the soldiers are going to get shot at a lot more often, and at a much shorter distance."
According to the SAF, the new uniform increases detection time by 30 to 50 percent in the urban environment, making it harder for enemies to find their targets.
It is also made from better quality fabric, which helps dissipate sweat and heat away from the body quicker, and comes with ergonomic features such as extra padding and pockets.
It will be introduced to all servicemen over a three-year period starting from 2009.
The first to receive the new uniforms will be recruits from the January Basic Military Training intake, as well as active personnel and NSmen in their sixth and seventh In-Camp Training years, while the rest will get theirs in 2010 and 2011.
NSmen currently in their seventh to ninth years, however, will not receive the new uniform.
SAF said this phased approach takes into consideration the wear and tear of servicemen's existing uniforms. - CNA/de
Secondly, the new uniform increases detection time. I suppose they (SAF) want our soldiers to recognise friendly forces easier? Doesn't that equate to our enemy detecting us faster too?
Anyway, while I do not really like the new design of the uniform (I realised our old uniform design rocks!), its a good move by SAF that they research and design with the objective of enchancing the survivability of our soldier.
I did some cam-whoring while they were preparing the food. A decent BBQ but unfortunately one of the BBQ star was not marinated long enough to absorb the taste - Chicken Wings. Among the rest were the usual hotdog (Eugene is a hotdog fan!), prawn, sotong (squid), bacon, satay etc.
Anyway, after the BBQ, we cease fired and went back to Eugene's modern lifestyle house. Its one of the nicest-designed house I have been to. We had some drinks, mahjong before the match between Man Utd and Arsenal started. The match was surprisingly one-sided as Man Utd thrashed Arsenal 4-0. Quite boring I would say. During the match, we were playing Indian poker where loser will have to drink (usual). The drinks for the night was Absolute Vodka with Sprite. I really dislike Vodka and had to down 2 cups (1/3 neat). Drank some beers throughout the night too.
It was time to say good bye when Wee Hian, Galvin, Ray and Jeremiah have to leave us at 3am+. Joel, Samuel, Da Xuan and me were staying for the night to catch a train back in the morning. I slept on the sofa in the living room with aircon switched on (yes, aircon in the living room). I adjusted the temperature throughout the night from 21 degrees to 23 degrees, from medium speed to lowest speed. ok, I am afraid of cold and I do not have a blanket.
Upon reaching home, I did some washing of dishes, collecting of laundry, reading newspaper before taking a nap till about 2pm. Then I went over to Wendy's house to help her with her work. Its period period for her now! Initially, I wanted to leave at around 8pm before was persuaded to stay for dinner. I always enjoyed the food at Wendy's house! After the dinner, I took a short rest on Wendy's bed before falling asleep deep and sound till 11pm. My poor Li Ling was working through my nap. Poor dear. *muackz*
I quickly go back home and continued with her work till 1am before proceeding to bed. She was working till 2am! poor girl..
Our "lao yu sheng" video. Check out the stupid acts by Galvin.

We met up at Boon Lay MRT at 4.45pm. Unfortunately, there were only 4 of us, Joel, Eugene, Wee Hian and me. Ray and Justin could not make it due to their work commitments. Da Xuan don't know why don't want to come. Jeremiah just touched down from his Hong Kong Holiday trip and could not make it. Thats about all of our family.
We proceeded to get a taxi to SAFTI's Army Museum, thats where the celebration is held at. Upon reaching the place, we saw lots of familiar, also unfamiliar faces. Coming out of the lift, we immediately saw our tall and easily recognised CO who always carried a smile. We held conversations with lots of our ex-BC, 2IC etc before proceeding in to receive our medals and to catch up with our specs and men.
Soon, it was time to say goodbye but we know it won't be the last time then we see each other because we are going back to camp next year for our CO's Change of Parade. I don't know why but we seems to have so much feelings for our ex-unit that makes us naturally wanting to go back to see them when opportunity arises. Credits to the CO for making our ex-unit to develop such a special and close bonds.
Knowing that the celebration did not cater for dinner, we went to Bugis to have a steamboat buffet. We walk round and round before settling down for dinner at Chuan Yi Pin, the steamboat buffet directly opposite Bugis Junction (Across the street). It cost $17.40nett but the food ain't very fantastic. Definitely not worth it though it met our objectives. Imagine the feelings of hungry we felt from 6.30pm to 9pm before finally able to put something into our mouth.
Just feel like posting some photos in my last NS overseas trip. Miss the times where dragging yourself out of the warm sleeping bag is such a challenge, miss the outfield sumptuous dinner, miss the outfield soccer.
In my short 2 years NS, I have the luxury of traveling to 4 different countries with the furthest South Africa. Of course I cannot reveal any more details beyond the country, if not I have to start killing my readers...with cheese.
This is South Africa nightsnack. Yes you heard it, nightsnack. Of course its to share among 10 - 15 people but its enough and fulfilling. You saw that, SFI?

One of the beer in South Africa
Enjoy a bottle of beer at their pub during the R&RAnd to my battery friends, 7 more months to ORD!! Cheers
So sad that we only took 1 photo on that day. Anyway, that is Joel and me. Joel is my OCS buddy at Sierra Wing. Very nice guy but still single. Only 1 thing bad about him. His bed was close to the metal rail where we would hang our towel. Occasionally when I woke up in the morning I would find my towel on the floor and not his at all! So I conclude he dislike me afterall but never admit!! hahaha :PAnyway, I forgot to mention about one incident that happened during that day. Wee Hian and me met up with Ray at Raffles Place MRT Station. We proceeded to Marina Bay MRT Station straight away. Suddenly, I notice that the train has unusually lots of people. At this time? (8pm) heading for Marina Bay? Then I thought they just wanna get to Marina Bay MRT in order to have a seat. After alighting, we proceeded up to the control station. To me surprise, I said that Marina Bay MRT Station has definitely changed a lot because it wasn't like that before. Wee Hian and Ray conformed. Then Ray asked how come the station a bit like Tanjong Pagar then we said "ya loh really look alike". Ray saw something and said "ta ma de zhen de shi Tanjong Pagar ah". We really didn't realised we were at the wrong station until we saw the word "Tanjong Pagar MRT Station".
It was so natural, we meet up, go down escalator, train come, board the train. No one realised we boarded the wrong side of the train. And I was right, there were far too many people to go Marina Bay just to get a seat, because some was standing!
I cannot remember when was the last time I have this feeling. I think it was a year ago in Thailand during my NS time. I cannot reveal about the things I did in Thailand because if I do and you saw, I have to kill you... with cheese...
After 15min of rest, I took the train again. Upon reaching Jurong East MRT, the same feeling came back. I quickly get out of the station and rushes to the toilet to release myself. Then I went to buy stuff to drink and eat.
I suspect it was due water and fatique issue. The previous night I did not really have a good sleep. And the next morning I only have a sip of water and no breakfast. In Army, we were always trained to, and subsequently train soldiers to water parade first thing in the morning and before lights out. This is to hydrate their body for the day and for the next day (Night water parade).
Morale of the story, if you foresee yourself having to attend a morning parade (Defined as standing prolong without much maneuver. e.g standing in the train) after a bad sleep the night, please do yourself a favor by drinking enough water before set off. And drinking enough is subjective. So, we always say that drink beyond your point of thirst. However, if the journey is long, do not drink too much as you might find yourself looking for the nearest washroom during the journey. My valuable advise is.......drink a sip is enough, period.
I went for my brunch before proceeding to the library to mug till 6pm. Reached the library at 12pm, felt very tired and sleepy because I woke up at 7.45am in the morning to prepare for the match only to see the pouring of rain. So, I took a nap till 1pm before starting my engine. Realised I did not bring some of the lecture notes but luckily I brought the book! :)
Left the library at 6pm because we are going Marina South for steamboat buffet to celebrate Wee Hian aka Willy aka Wee Wee's birthday! Unfortunately, the turnout is quite bad as Justin, Galvin and Da Xuan could not make it. Nevertheless, we still have a good dinner with much Army life memories rekindled. Jokes were made about Justin (as usual), missing our dear Kah Heng and Ah Fu Ge in Australia. Hey, when you guys are back in Dec, we definitely must have a full strength gathering minus 2 ok?
After the dinner, Ray felt tired and headed home in a cab. Left Wee Hian, Joel and me. We decided to go Orchard Rd's Swenson to chill out. We ordered a banana split and one other recommended by Joel. Can't remembered the name but I got picture! Got pic got talk right? BUT, the photos are still with Wee Hian, so I will upload the pictures as soon as I receive it.
Left the place at around 1.30am and headed back to hostel. Ends of a Thursday night.
Oh wait, just an update on the Singapore market today hehe. Our dear STI finally set a new record high at 3,714.77, surpassing the previous peak of 3,665.13 set on July 24. My portfolio also went up a little, most noticeably is FJ Ben and Ipco. Prospect looks really good now and can't wait to see how tomorrow's market will open.
Time to sleep. Night folks.
