Youth's last moments captured

No Comment - Post a comment

THE final moments before Nanyang Technological University (NTU) student David Hartanto Widjaja fell to his death were captured on a mobile phone by a fellow faculty mate.

Fourth-year electrical and electronic engineering student Lin Zhenxing was waiting for the lift with a friend, Mr Liu Yan, when they spotted Mr Widjaja - alleged to have stabbed his final-year project supervisor, Associate Professor Chan Kap Luk, during a meeting - sitting on the rooftop of a link bridge three floors below them.

Mr Lin whipped out his mobile phone to record Mr Widjaja through a glass window, for about eight seconds, before he called campus security using the phone.

Meanwhile, Mr Liu, a Chinese national, called the police.

While both men were making calls, Mr Widjaja allegedly pushed himself off the rooftop, falling four storeys to his death.

The phone's memory card, which contained the footage, was handed over to police at the scene.

It was screened in court yesterday at the fourth day of the coroner's inquiry into Mr Widjaja's death on March 2.

A total of 10 witnesses - including NTU staff and students, Mr Widjaja's online 'wife' and a forensic expert - took the stand.

It was also the first time Mr Widjaja's family, who had flown in from Indonesia, viewed the footage.

The footage was grainy and shaky and showed Mr Widjaja sitting by himself on the rooftop of the bridge, first looking down and then to his right - before the clip ended. His legs, shorts and T-shirt were seen to be covered with blood.

Words Women Use

No Comment - Post a comment

1.) Fine: This is the word women use to end an argument when they are right and you need to shut up.

2.) Five Minutes: If she is getting dressed, this means half an hour. "Five Minutes" is only five minutes if you have just been given five more minutes to watch the game before helping around the house.

3.) Nothing: This is the calm before the storm. This means something and you should be on your toes. Arguments that begin with "Nothing" usually end in "Fine". (Refer back to #1 for the meaning of "Fine".)

4.) Go Ahead: This is a dare, not permission. Don't do it!

5.) Loud Sigh: This is actually a word, but is a non-verbal statement often misunderstood by men. A loud sigh means she thinks you are an idiot and wonders why she is wasting her time standing here and arguing with you about "nothing". (Refer back to #3 for the meaning of "Nothing".)

6.) That's Okay: This is one of the most dangerous statements a women can make to a man. "That's Okay" means she wants to think long and hard before deciding how and when you will pay for your mistake.

7.) Thanks: A woman is thanking you -- do not question, or faint. Just say you're welcome.

8.) If you say so: Men, take note: this is a trick. This is THE statement that means the opposite of what it says. When a woman says, "If you say so," she actually means, "you're an idiot; I can't believe I ever married you, and you better realize how lucky you are every day of your miserable life." She will then issue forth a loud sigh (see #5), and assign you a task worthy of your limited intelligence (although you will NOT be given the "five minutes" as discussed in #2).

9.) Whatever: Is a women's way of saying F@!K YOU!

10 .) Don't worry about it, I got it: Another dangerous statement, meaning this is something that a woman has told a man to do several times, but is now doing it herself. This will later result in a man asking "what's wrong", for the woman's; response to be "nothing" ( refer back to #3 for the meaning of "Nothing") .

Prof recounts knife attack

NANYANG Technological University (NTU) student David Hartanto Widjaja turned up unexpectedly at his professor's office on March 2 morning, after avoiding him for a week to discuss his final year project.

He was supposed to see Associate Professor Chan Kap Luk on Feb 26 morning together with several other final year students but he didn't show up. Prof Chan then moved the meeting to the next morning but this had to be rescheduled to 2pm that day as the professor was engaged with two other students that morning. Widjaja did not come in the afternoon.

Three days later, he walked into Prof Chan's office at 10.25am. What followed was an exchange which ended in Prof Chan, 45, being stabbed and the 21-year-old electrical and electronic engineering undergraduate falling four storeys to his death from a bridge.

Prof Chan who was Widjaja's project supervisor, recounted the moments leading to attack on that fateful morning in his conditional statement when he took the stand on Thursday on Day Two of a coroner's inquiry into the Indonesian student's death fall.

He told a packed courtroom that Widjaja came to his office on March 2 morning, saying he wanted to discuss his final year project. Widjaja then produced a thumb drive, claiming his work was stored in it. Prof Chan had problem running the programme on his computer, which showed nothing. To which, Mr Widjaja insisted that he had indeed done the project.

During the exchange, Prof Chan noticed that Widjaja's voice was turning shaky. Moments later, when his back was turned against Widjaja, he felt a blow on his back. He spun around and saw Widjaja wielding an 18-cm knife coming for him. Prof Chan said he tried to block with his arm and fell to the floor.

He said Widjaja attacked him again but he managed to grab the knife, breaking the blade from the handle. A struggle followed, during which Widjaja fell back and hit a metal filing cabinet in the room.

The professor then tried to run out of the office but was blocked by Widjaja. He managed to push Widjaja aside and ran towards the students' graduation office a few metres away. While being tended to by staff, Prof Chan said it was then that he realised that he had been stabbed in the back by Widjaja.

The professor suffered a cut on the tendon of his right index finger and needed five stitches for the wound on his back. He was given 20 days' medical leave.

Prof Chan said that as he was running away from Widjaja, he glanced back briefly and heard the Indonesian student shouting from the door way that he blamed the professor for the whole incident.

He said he did not know what happened to Widjaja as he was rushed to hospital, and only found out he had died from the news.

The inquiry continues.

Exams are over!

No Comment - Post a comment

But I am not happy at all because 2 of the papers are killers i.e. new type of questions came out which are different from the past 3 years. Really caught many of us by surprised and hopefully they would do some moderation, if not there might be a similar failure rate as CFA papers!

Anyway, since there are not much use crying over spilled milk now, I shall concentrate on my deserved break (Just feel that UOL exams paper is really #)($&#$)(&#, most of the papers are a test on your English and understanding of the concept as a whole. This means that even if you study diligently throughout from beginning to end of semester, you would still lose out to a smart guy who chiong in the last few weeks and who managed to interpret the question correctly because he has a better English language!)

Enough said about the exams. Trying to work towards to be a principle-minded person, I shall forget about my exams and concentrate on my holiday! So many things are waiting for me; swimming, jogging, soccer, a whole list of books, and maybe learn a few more dishes!

Few weeks ago, I sent out more than 20 resumes for a 3 months temp job but to no avail. NO ONE called at all, how depressing is that. And the job alerts I received are xxx firms representing xxx insurance company wanting to view my resume from jobscentral. But the good news is that I am going for another internship interview on Monday at a particular S&P500 company in Marymount for some accounting position. Hopefully I could clinch it since the labour market has so much excess supply (Reminds me of my econs paper yesterday which I hope I can just pass! :( ).
