The mystery in the last alphabet of our NRIC

4 comments - Post a comment

As part of work requirement, my colleague sent me a program called "NRIC Checker". Basically, its a program that returns you the last alphabet of a particular NRIC given the first seven digits. I remembered I came across the computation of the last alphabet few years ago. Out of curiousity, I googled for the formula.

The Singapore NRIC Check Digit

The Singapore NRIC number is made up of 7 digits and a letter behind. This letter is calculated from the first 7 digits using the modulus eleven method.

The steps involved to obtain the check digit is

  1. Multiply each digit in the NRIC number by its weight.
  2. Add together the above products.
  3. Divide the resulting sum by 11.
  4. Subtract the remainder from 11 to give the check digit.
  5. Check the check digit against the table to obtain the alphabet.

The following table shows the weight for the NRIC number in Singapore :

2

7

6

5

4

3

2

The following table is used to change the check digit into the corresponding alphabet.

This system is used to prevent illegal workers from entering Singapore with a fake passport using a fake NRIC number.

e.g A person has a NRIC number S1234567A.

To find out if the NRIC number is valid, we need to use the method above.

2(weight)*1(NRIC number) + 7(weight)*2(NRIC number) + 6*3 + 5*4 + 4*5 + 3*6 + 2*7 = 106

106/11 = 9 r 7

11-7 = 4

Using the table above, if the check digit is 4, then the alphabet at the end of the NRIC number should be D. So, we can conclude that this NRIC number is invalid.

Puzzle has been solved!

No Comment - Post a comment

Few days ago, I posted a puzzle whether a bottle poisoned wine can be identified among the batch of 1000 bottles within 24hours.

One of them was anonymous, the other was fatboyho.

Quoting one of solution here for all.
solving this puzzle requires the understanding of the binary system. each 'pattern' in the binary system corresponds to one unique number.

the 1st prisoner will take the 1st number of the binary (so he'll be taking a sip out of bottles 1,3,5,7...all the way to 999).

the 2nd prisoner will take the 2nd number of the binary (bottles 2,3,6,7,10,11...).

the rest of the prisoners will take their respective places in the binary. (3rd prisoner take 3rd number in binary and so on so forth)

so let's say bottle 736 is the one with the poison. the binary for 736 is 0101110000. therefore, prisoners 5,6,7,9 will be dead by the next day.
Cheers.

Stupid Kids! ARGH

No Comment - Post a comment

Was at AMK library for the past 2 days. And for the consecutive 2 days there were disturbing kids who just can't keep their mouth shut!

The 1st day was a group of 4 poly guys who sat behind me about 2m away. They arrived in the morning and chit chat their way till night. Are they here to study or chat? The 2nd day was a group of Secondary school malay kids who brought a notebook along and just giggle and chatting in front of the screen. What the hell? Library is no longer the way before where everyone has to whisper even at close contact.

Anyway, posted a little puzzle few days ago titled "Identify the poisoned wine" here. Shall reveal a much cleaner and easy to execute solution during the weekends. I know you can't wait, so do I lol

Identify the poisoned wine

8 comments - Post a comment

CAN YOU SOLVE THIS PUZZLE?

A king has 1000 bottles of wine. An assasin tried to poison the wine. The king's guards caught the assasin after he poisoned only one bottle, but they did not know which bottle was poisoned.

It is known however that the poison is so powerful that even a tiny bit of the poisoned wine will kill, and it is known also that the poison will only kill after 24 hours. The king order you, his advisor, to get some of the criminals in the dungeon to test the wines for him. The king expects to find out the result the next day, essentially 24 hours after the testers drink the wine.

Now the simplest way is if 1000 criminals were available, just get them to each drink a little bit from each of the 1000 bottles. Hence, the poisoned bottle will be identified when one particular tester, out of the thousand testers, dies the following day. However, only 10 criminals is imprisoned in the dungeon on that particular day!

Is there a way to identify the poisoned bottle by the following day using only 10 testers? What is the method?"
