The jogging jinx

No Comment - Post a comment

Got this from an Adidas broucher that highlighted the jogger's injury jinx which I, along with ahfu and Siong, are experiencing.

Basically, Dr Low shared that knee injury is common among runner as the knee cap rubs against the thigh bone during the process. Well, if doing progressive training doesn't help remove the pain, seeking medication attention is probably the only way.

As for me, I completed a 60min soccer match without any sign of the injury acting upon. Hopefully the injury would not resurface after my jogging tonight. *finger crossed*

Starhub Maxonline is so slow #(*^#($^#

Starhub is really getting on my nerve. Its so terribly slow these couple of weeks. Its worse if my sister is using the desktop; took roughly 1min to finish loading few web site. My contract will be up in Dec. Hopefully they will improve on their network, if not I will be Singnet bound. Afterall, ADSL is fast for my youtube/pipiplayer/basically video streaming mad sister.

Anyway, Team FATA failed to do a 3 wins in a row when they succumbed under the mighty samba players. Check out the review here. Also, my post-marathon injury is still haunting me!!! ARGH!!

Review of Adidas Sundown Marathon

Patrick, Xiang Hui, Siong Wei, his friend and I found ourselves traveling to Changi Village on a late Saturday night. We were heading for the Adidas Sundown Marathon event held at Changi, the inaugural night Marathon in the region.

I have my dinner at 8.30pm with extra rice and ingredients, courtesy of Bella. This is the last meal I gonna have for the next 9 to 10 hours plus. Proceeded to the bus interchange to meet them before taking Bus 109. We reached Changi Village at around 10.15pm only to see the world area flooded with people, a scene you won't see much there.

We navigated through the crowds and found our way to the event location. Races for the Corporate Team Challenge and Ultra-Marathon (MAD) were going on. We quickly found a spot and started changing into our race kit. The usual pre-race routine took place after; checking in of baggage, unloading our last round of water, warming up.

The whole event was lively with many booths, some of which belong to the sponsors. There was also massage area, water distribution area (water and 100plus), and information counter where we got our cylum sticks.

Soon, it was approaching the 12am flag-off time. We went over to the starting point only to find ourselves stationed all the way back about 20m behind. The whole starting point area was crowded with runners like us, the pioneer night Marathon runners in Singapore.

There was not really any significant alert when the competition was fired off, at least for those who were stationed at the back. The first 1km was kind of start stop due to the narrowness of the route. The next 5km to 7km was really just finding gap to overtake the crowd as there was no "keep to the left unless overtaking" rule present.

Soon, gaps beginning to open up upon entering East Coast Park and I have already left Xiang Hui, Patrick and Siong Wei behind. However, I lost sight of Siong Wei's friend who was indeed fast. We were cheered by the crowds who were chilling up on a Saturday night at East Coast Park. It was quite an enjoyable run with so many people cheering us on. Of course, I was still feeling good as my right calf injury had not kicked in yet. The same route was indeed easier to run compared to the running in the morning (Had ran the same route during my Army day's 21km run).

The turning point was at the end of East Coast Park, marking the start of the 22km. My timing was still a pretty good 2 hours 7 minutes. We were welcomed to the next stretch of route by several overhead bridges, few consisting of stairs which really slowed and drained our energy. Most of the runners were seen walking up the stairs and slope. Only few brave ones run up. We ran past Eunos MRT before reaching Bedok Reservoir. This time round, the stretch of sand leading into the Reservoir demoralised us further.

Was feeling hungry when the time approaches 3am. My motivation during that few minutes was really to look out for the next station in hope that theres banana. Yes BANANA! The yellowish fruit. Why banana you might ask?

Bananas offer the body carbohydrates, its main source of energy. This carbohydrate provides the body with both a quick boost and a sustained release of energy over a period of time, which helps to improve endurance and concentration during physical activity.

Thankfully, there was, along with the PowerBar Gel and 100plus. Banana and 100plus just taste like abalone and tea (well, close to it :P).

Soon, I felt my right leg aching, particularly at the knee joint area and outside thigh. I began walking, taking big strides before jogging again. I could not jog more than I walked as I finally realized that my right leg had given way and my running system had broken down which I have not experienced before. My hope of completing within 5 hours was diminished. My next worry was actually if I could finish the race. This really dealt a heavy blow to a person who always had confidence in his running.

I hit Loyang which was deemed as the "Homerun" stretch of route. I found myself stopping and struggling to overcome my injury. I could hardly bend my knee anymore; I had to limp all the way back for more than 2 hours. Those that I once overtook were overtaking me in batches. Even those walkers overtook me. The limping was causing more hurt to my calf muscle, I have to slow down further more in order to prevent cramp. Fatigue level was running high as I felt kind of sleepy with all the limping at around 5am.

I was actually hoping for Xiang Hui and Siong Wei to catch up with me and maybe walk back together. In spite of the disability to jog, I still keep track of the timing and distance. I was actually limping at a rate of 2km every 25minutes. After some extrapolation (Yes, my mind is still working fine!), I predicted I could finish the race before 6.15am.

It was down to the last 2km when it started pouring! Oh man, what a race it was. I picked up pace (a little) and managed to finished the race with a time of 6 hours. There was a long queue of runners under the rain waiting to collect their finisher pack which consists of a Finisher Medal and Finisher Tee.

The infamous finisher tee that cause many runners their legs LOL

The rain was still pouring; my running shirt was drenched. I change into the finisher tee while waiting for the rest to arrive. I got a seat beside Siong Wei's friend and chatted while waiting. Sun began to brighten up the skys. Unfortunately, I do not have my handphone with me as the sunrise scenery after rain was quite captivating. Familiar faces were seen passing by while waiting for Siong Wei and Xianghui. (QQ, Daryl, Jian Xiong, Yan Kai etc)

While waiting for Patrick to arrive

We finally left the event place at about 8.30am with Patrick crossing the finishing line just in time for his finisher tee and medal. We proceeded to Changi Village for a well deserved breakfast before leaving for our home.

It was indeed a unforgettable experience. Jogging through the night, up and down the bridges and stairs, banana that taste like heaven in the middle of the night, fellow pioneers focusing on completing the race on their own and last but not least, limping for a good 2 hours.

The legs and shoes that braved through the sand, bridges, rain and of course a distance of 42km

All collapsed while on the bus back home

A stranger who also attended the race

Thanks for reading this long post. Shall be looking forward to the Army Half Marathon and Standard Chartered Full Marathon. Anyone joining me?

Counting down to 3 more hours

Tried to sleep but couldn't get the nap I wanted. My right calf is still feeling the strain when I tried to stretch it. I reckon it will haunt me upon hitting the 1 hour mark race. I have no idea why I got the injury during a soccer match at Katong almost a month ago.

Countdown to Adidas Sundown Marathon

24 more hours before the flag off of the first night marathon in the region. I am here resting at home. Gotta sleep well tonight and will take another nap in the afternoon tomorrow. Can't wait for the race to start but I know I will be cursing while running in the race.

Adidas Sundown Marathon

I previously mentioned in my blog here that I would be running the Adidas Sundown Marathon. No, I am not blogging to say that I am chickening out (rahhh). Instead, just want to compute some statistics with regards to the training I have did over the last few months.

The marathon is on this coming Saturday night, flagging off time was 2359hrs. No, it is not a typo, it is really 2359hrs. Adidas Sundown Marathon is set to be the region's longest night running race and I am proud to be one of the pioneers. =)

Over a period of 2 months, I managed to clock a distance of 78.1km with a total timing of 511min or 8hrs 51mins. Longest distance clocked was only 16km. Doesn't seems impressive and adequate enough to prepare for a marathon. A small consolation was the weekly Sunday soccer kick-about/matches and some swimming on Saturday.

I read through the pre-race review by one of the runners. He made it really sounds easy; probably due to the majority of content falling on the route instead of the experience. The probable obstacles I foresee are, ceteris paribus, the wind direction/velocity, gradient and length of the slope and of course the weather.

There is also an interesting contest whereby one has to write in to state the reason he enjoys running in the night. Check out the Most Outrageous Answer by one of the contestants below
I believe I am a cheetah in my past life and that's why I love to run in my present life. Cheetah likes to run and hunt at night and this habit was passed on to my present life. That's why I love night running so much!'
Well, stay tuned for my post-race review. =)

Precious Weekends

No Comment - Post a comment

Good things have to come to an end. So are our precious weekends.

Not much significant things did over the weekends in particular. Managed to finished a Wall Straits book which I will give a little introduction to it soon.

As per Sunday morning routine, I will hop down to Bishan park to have a game of soccer with some uncles. The pitch is really getting from bad to worse after the heavy rain in these few weeks. Sooner or later, we have to re-locate to another pitch.

Or will we? The core of my soccer team is more or less there already. Just pending for a few more replies to get it going. I am looking to build a decent squad of 16 strong players committing every Sunday for friendly matches. The only severe area we are lacking as of current is Goalkeeper. We are still contacting our army unit goalkeeper William, hopefully he will give us the nod to be our first choice keeper. Or you just happen to drop by and would like to join our passionate soccer team, feel free to drop me a mail.

It will be another hectic working week starting from tomorrow as the deadline is drawing nearer and nearer. Heads will roll if we do not complete in time, but definitely not mine :P Been working OT for the past week; haven't been training for my Marathon. I read on today's Sunday Times that one of the lady been doing cycle session at gym during her office lunch break. And during the weekends, she would clock 30km of distance on foot. Thats quite an amazing discipline she had. I am been motivated again to clock long distance over the weekdays, particularly Tuesday and Thursday.

Its 10.40pm now and I am going to have a shower before settling down in front of my notebook to catch the Clash of the Titans: Manchester United VS Arsenal. Hopefully it won't be another hammer by Manchester as I am expecting some brilliant and exciting exchange between them. Of course, with my favorite peanuts.

Cheers.

Registration for the commonly known as Army Half Marathon opened today. The race is on the 24th Aug, flag off time at 6.30am. Interested parties can sign up online from now till 30 Apr 08 to take advantage of the early bird fee at $25 and $20 for the public and Safra member respectively.

In addition, there is another full marathon by Adidas which is the adidas Sundown Marathon. Register anytime from now till 30 Mar 08 during their Special Period for a fee of $65. Yes, there is a meaning for it's Sundown title. Race starts late into the night and runners are expected to complete the race before 11am the next day in order to get the finisher goodie bag. Flag off times for the Ultra Marathon (84km) and Marathon (42km) are 9pm and 11.59pm respectively.

I have already registered for both events and might be going for another one which is the LionCity Marathon this coming June 29. Their registration is still pending. Will see how.

Anyway, I began my first preparation for the coming Sundown Marathon today with a slow and steady 2.4km jog with a timing of 15min 27sec, followed by some chin-ups. Been really a long time since I started a proper jogging. Looking forward to the next one this Wed. Of course, jogging alone is bored, thats why I have my Mystery MSN Friend to accompany me. He is training for his IPPT this coming June.

Lastly, if you have noticed, I have added a little information at the lower right column of my blog. Entitled "Road to Marathon", this little area shall be catered for the amount of distance I clocked before the real show begins.

Just for fun, below is the origin of the name Marathon extracted from Wikipedia.
The name marathon comes from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek soldier, who was sent from the town of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon. It is said that he ran the entire distance without stopping and burst into the Senate, exclaiming "Νενικήκαμεν" (Nenikékamen, 'We have won') before collapsing and dying of heartattack.
