Essential of Water Parade

No Comment - Post a comment

I woke up at 7am. Drank a sip of water and went to school on one of the weekdays. The train was packed so I have to stand all the way from Yio Chu Kang MRT to Boon Lay MRT. Upon reaching Yew Yee MRT, I felt sudden giddiness so I quickly alight to take a seat on the platform. My face was pale, hence I bend down my head to let the blood flows.

I cannot remember when was the last time I have this feeling. I think it was a year ago in Thailand during my NS time. I cannot reveal about the things I did in Thailand because if I do and you saw, I have to kill you... with cheese...

After 15min of rest, I took the train again. Upon reaching Jurong East MRT, the same feeling came back. I quickly get out of the station and rushes to the toilet to release myself. Then I went to buy stuff to drink and eat.

I suspect it was due water and fatique issue. The previous night I did not really have a good sleep. And the next morning I only have a sip of water and no breakfast. In Army, we were always trained to, and subsequently train soldiers to water parade first thing in the morning and before lights out. This is to hydrate their body for the day and for the next day (Night water parade).

Morale of the story, if you foresee yourself having to attend a morning parade (Defined as standing prolong without much maneuver. e.g standing in the train) after a bad sleep the night, please do yourself a favor by drinking enough water before set off. And drinking enough is subjective. So, we always say that drink beyond your point of thirst. However, if the journey is long, do not drink too much as you might find yourself looking for the nearest washroom during the journey. My valuable advise is.......drink a sip is enough, period.

It was a scam!

Nothing much today, spent the day mugging at the library. Ate breakfast, lunch and dinner alone. I left at 8pm. Most of the stalls at Canteen A has already closed so I thought just go back my Hall 5 canteen and eat. But the thought of eating those food just make my appetite gone. Less than 2 months, already sian of the food liao. Then on the bus back to hall, I notice the Canteen at Hall 4 is still open so decided to have my dinner there. Ordered salted fish fried rice. The portion is so big. (Look at Picture 1) The salted fish ain't salted, rice not much taste. The reason I ordered is because the menu wrote Tasty salted fish fried rice. It was a scam!

Picture 1 (Big portion)

Picture 2 (Aftermath)

Even though the portion was big, I managed to finish it off surprisingly given my small appetite :X. And Picture 2 is dedicated to my good Poly Friend Ang Jit Hwee because there are PEAS in the plate, one of his favorite. :P

Disclaimer: Photos are taken with my soon-to-gone-haywire Sony Ericsson K700i. I hereby declare that the photos are copyrighted by me. Should you want to link, share, copy, cut the salted fish fried rice of Canteen 4/or even the PEAS, please request permission from me. And you should start composing your email with the following sentence, "I, *rank & name*, hereby request permission to *bla bla bla...*"

Wee Hian's Birthday!

No Comment - Post a comment

It rained the whole Thursday and resulted in the postpone of our Hall's first friendly soccer match. Good and bad. Good, because my body was not in tip top condition and leg muscle was still feeling a bit stretched. Bad, because I was eagerly looking forward to it. Its been some time since I last have an official soccer match. Miss the intense battle and "bullying" of the referee hehe.

I went for my brunch before proceeding to the library to mug till 6pm. Reached the library at 12pm, felt very tired and sleepy because I woke up at 7.45am in the morning to prepare for the match only to see the pouring of rain. So, I took a nap till 1pm before starting my engine. Realised I did not bring some of the lecture notes but luckily I brought the book! :)

Left the library at 6pm because we are going Marina South for steamboat buffet to celebrate Wee Hian aka Willy aka Wee Wee's birthday! Unfortunately, the turnout is quite bad as Justin, Galvin and Da Xuan could not make it. Nevertheless, we still have a good dinner with much Army life memories rekindled. Jokes were made about Justin (as usual), missing our dear Kah Heng and Ah Fu Ge in Australia. Hey, when you guys are back in Dec, we definitely must have a full strength gathering minus 2 ok?

After the dinner, Ray felt tired and headed home in a cab. Left Wee Hian, Joel and me. We decided to go Orchard Rd's Swenson to chill out. We ordered a banana split and one other recommended by Joel. Can't remembered the name but I got picture! Got pic got talk right? BUT, the photos are still with Wee Hian, so I will upload the pictures as soon as I receive it.

Left the place at around 1.30am and headed back to hostel. Ends of a Thursday night.

Oh wait, just an update on the Singapore market today hehe. Our dear STI finally set a new record high at 3,714.77, surpassing the previous peak of 3,665.13 set on July 24. My portfolio also went up a little, most noticeably is FJ Ben and Ipco. Prospect looks really good now and can't wait to see how tomorrow's market will open.

Time to sleep. Night folks.

If you have been noticing, I have done some changes to this blog content and layout (isn't it obvious?)

Firstly, some people are complaining that the site is too slow on their PC, taking as long as 1min to load finish. I have to explain. Sometimes if the site takes longer than usual to load (more than 10sec), please just do a refresh manually. The reason behind is too cheem for me to explain, got to do with hardware (CPU, RAM, Graphics Card, Buses etc) and software (Web Browser, HTML coding, Javascript etc). However, if you are really interested to find out more, you can go to howstuffworks.

Nevertheless, I have removed the photo slide at the top of the blog in order to cut down the loading time. However, I will post new photo slides whenever theres a new photo collection. :P Then some of the lagness I have to admit is due to some of the youtube videos that I linked to my blog here.

Next, I have also changed the template to a 3rd party one which I got from my good friend Google. I like it because it has a wider width and it has a clean white foreground for my posts and nice sky blue background. Looks pleasing to the eyes under extreme or low light (I care for my readers' eyes). Anyone beg to differ?

Alright, I will stop here. Its 12.25am now, my dear is asleep. I have about 7 hours of sleep left. My hall will be having a friendly soccer match with another hall at 9.30am. Its our first official match, immediately after just 1 training session. Our bonds are not there yet and no one know how long he will play tomorrow as it will be a rotational game with many substitutions in between. Well, results are not important. Hopefully we will take the game to understand more about each other and for those inexperienced, learn the nature of the game (rough and smelly). Predict a big loss for us.

Oh and tomorrow is Wee Hian aka Willy aka Wee Wee's birthday tomorrow. Sadly, the turnout will be quite bad I reckon. So far only Ray and Galvin (surprisingly) confirmed. Pending replies from Justin and Joel. We are meeting for dinner (the typical usual celebration nowadays) at Marina South for steamboat buffet. Time to get smelly!

Good night.

Indicators of Stress?

Its so bored in the hostel sometimes...

Because everyday is just mugging, mugging and more mugging!

Wendy Sim decided to accompany me by.......
However, she began to realise and is worried for me.......
She decided to cheer me up by doing this pose which I like a lot :>
As you can see, over-stressed of work leads to not knowing what ones is doing. Take small break in between mugging to de-stress and definitely one way of doing that is trying the above stance. However, do it at your own risk. And children below the age of 50, please seeks parental advise before committing such act.

Updates on Citibank Financial Challenge

Woke up at 0730hrs to wash up and meet up Wendy at Serangoon MRT station. Took 95 outside MOE building and missed the stop and had to backtrack 200m hah. Sorry dear have to make you walk with me under the sun for 7min 20sec. We were one of the first few to reach there. I didn't know registration was needed and hence Wendy could not get in, sorry once again Li Ling. Made her wake up so early, then reach there cannot get in. She went to the nearest food court to have her breakfast, then bought the new paper.

The event started at 1000hrs. We were greeted by both the NTU Investment Club and NUS Invest Group President before the commencement of the challenge. 1st round was a 45 questions MCQ testing the participants' knowledge on Citi and SGX history, financial questions, stock/UT questions and some history of the great investors like Warren Buffet and John Bogle. 2nd round was a speed round consisting of 30 questions with 30sec for each question.

After the lunch, the results were announced. Unfortunately, we did not get into the top 5 teams. We remained seated to view the final round. Some of the questions in the final round were ridiculously hard. Fortunately, we did not get in lol. We left shortly after.

Well, always treat competition with an open mind. Loss is insignificant, whats importance is the participation and experience gained. I saw the poor organisation of the event, poor selection of MCs. So, I am still glad I participated.

It was around 2pm when we left NUS for Marina Square for our lunch at Sakae Sushi. After the heavy lunch, Wendy and I decided to proceed home for rest as she is not feeling well after yesterday's home-cooked dinner by her. Poor girl. Don't be sad ok? I like the prawn and vegetable! hee... and I ate 2 1/2 bowls of rice :) Jia you k!

Citibank-The Business Times Financial Challenge 2007

Haven't really found the time to blog except to post some videos and jokes to entertain my readers. Hope it does it job well enough to keep my precious readers.

Next week is NTU recess week. Its actually a mid-term break. For the hardworking, its actually revision week, for the rest, its relax and recreation week! So, which group do I belong to? If you know me well, you probably will still guess it wrong! haha cause I belong to the middle. :) If this is Secondary school or Poly's term break, it will definitely be R&R week for me. Here at NTU has 1 good advantage. There is no study week! Because there is only study DAY, everyday is a study day, including weekends which is tutorial day! argh.

Ok, I know those who had already graduated and working outside now must be complaining and telling me in their heart to cherish my school days cause working life is so stressful and boring and tiring. Yes I know all these, I said these to my dear Wendy while she is mugging for exams while I am still in NS, missing my sec and poly sch days. Its just some rants that I need to let it off after a month plus in Uni life. So please forgive me cause I still love all of you here. :D

I went for my Hall soccer training session yesterday. Its been some time since I last wore my soccer boots. We met at the field at 6pm and had a small 7 aside game till 7pm. A good introductory game that each is able to observe the rest in their style of playing. As usual, I played up front with a supporting mid. Managed to score a header before been swapped to the opposite team. The captain has good command control and constantly switching players to see how they adapt in another team. Next Monday will be another training session before a friendly in NTU on Thursday. Looking forward to it.

Just some update over the recess week. Tomorrow, I will be going to NUS for the above mentioned event. Students from NTU and NUS will form a team of 3 to compete in the competition which comprises of 3 rounds. First round is to answer some MCQ questions, second round is some Financial Speed Round questions. And those who got through the first 2 rounds will proceed to the final round which details are unknown. Both of my teammates are from Accountancy, 1 of which is Year 1 and the other is Year 3. We have decided to split the workload prior to the competition. The Year 3 undergraduate who is known as Rainna, will take care of the financial ratios and statement portion as she has more experience and knowledge after going through 3 years of accountancy program. So her speed in deriving final answer is crucial in the 2nd round. The other is a Year 1 undergraduate call Dennis. Like me, Dennis has also invested in some SGX counters and are actively monitoring the market. However, Dennis prefer to adopt a top-down approach in analyzing stock while I'm the opposite (kind of the buffet way). So, Dennis will definitely be a great asset to the team with his additional knowledge on the latest financial news. Wish us luck!

*WOMEN'S REVENGE*
"Cash, check or charge?" I asked, after folding items the woman wished to purchase.
As she fumbled for her wallet, I noticed a remote control for a television set in her purse.
"So, do you always carry your TV remote?" I asked.
"No," she replied, "but my husband refused to come shopping with me,
and I figured this was the most evil thing I could do to him legally."

*UNDERSTANDING WOMEN*
(A MAN'S PERSPECTIVE)
I know I'm not going to understand women.
I'll never understand how you can take boiling hot wax,
pour it onto your upper thigh, rip the hair out by the root,
and still be afraid of a spider.

*WIFE VS. HUSBAND*
A couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word.
An earlier discussion had led to an argument and
neither of them wanted to concede their position.
As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats, and pigs,
the husband asked sarcastically, "Relatives of yours?"
"Yep," the wife replied, "in-laws."

*WORDS*
A husband read an article to his wife about how many words women use a day...
30,000 to a man's 15,000.
The wife replied, "The reason has to be because we have to repeat everything to men...
The husband then turned to his wife and asked, "What?"

*CREATION *
A man said to his wife one day, "I don't know how you can be
so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time.
"The wife responded, "Allow me to explain.
God made me beautiful so you would be attracted to me;
God made me stupid so I would be attracted to you !

*THE SILENT TREATMENT*
A man and his wife were having some problems at home
and were giving each other the silent treatment.
Suddenly, the man realized that the next day, he would need his wife to wake him
at 5:0 0 AM for an early morning business flight.
Not wanting to be the first to break the silence (and LOSE), he wrote on a piece of paper,
"Please wake me at 5:00 AM ." He left it where he knew she would find it.
The next morning, the man woke up, only to discover it was 9:00 AM and he had missed his flight Furious, he was about to go and see why his wife hadn't wakened him,
when he noticed a piece of paper by the bed.
The paper said, "It is 5:00 AM . Wake up."

World Vision Singapore

No Comment - Post a comment

Recently, I received an email from one of my readers asking if I could help to post something here. Well, as long as its not illegal, rest assured I will try my best to fulfill the request. And sorry for the late posting as it has slipped off my mind. Anyway here it is.

Basically, it is about helping to promote charity deeds particularly towards this organization called World Vision Singapore. They are dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

World Vision was founded in 1950 by Dr. Bob Pierce, a young pastor and missionary, who had first been sent to China and South Korea in 1947 by the Youth for Christ missionary organization. Pierce remained at the head of World Vision for nearly two decades, but resigned from the organization in 1967.

World Vision began caring for orphans and other children in need first in South Korea, then expanding throughout Asia and, eventually, in more than 90 countries, embracing larger issues of community development and advocacy for the poor as part of its basic mission to help children and their families build a sustainable future.

Approximately half of World Vision's programs are funded through child sponsorship. Individuals, families, churches, schools, and other groups sponsor specific children or specific community projects in their own country or abroad. Sponsors send funds each month to provide support for the sponsored children or projects.

Beyond

No Comment - Post a comment

Beyond was a famous rock band in Hong Kong that was founded in 1983. They have always identified with the people of Hong Kong, as reflected in their songs about social issues, pursuit of dreams, politics, and peace. Wong Ka Kui's " 海闊天空 (Boundless Oceans Vast Skies) & 光輝歲月(Glorious Years) are two of their best known works.

In June 1993, Wong Ka Kui sustained massive head injuries after falling from a broken stage on a game show in Japan. Wong Ka Kui fell into a coma and died one week later. He was 31 years old. His funeral procession caused traffic in various major city streets of Hong Kong to grind to a standstill, and almost every famous Hong Kong Cantopop singer was in attendance.

The below song, 海闊天空, reminds the singer in the video of his elder brother, Beyond's original vocal/guitar player Wong Ka Kui. Very touching video.

1996 Live Concert : 海闊天空

2003 Live Concert : 海闊天空

1991 Live Concert : 光輝歲月sang by
Wong Ka Kui

They played their last concert in Hong Kong under the Beyond name on 1st February 2005, before embarking on a world tour, including stops in Toronto, Canada and various cities in mainland China, after which the band officially disbanded in their last stop in Singapore.

At present, the band has parted ways, with each member pursuing his own solo career.

Options for poorer non-elite students

No Comment - Post a comment

Was chatting with one of my secondary school friend when he gave me this link. Below is extracted from the web site.

Children from rich background have it easy. Many doctors come from rich families. Rich kids go to elite schools. If they work sufficiently hard, they can almost guarantee themselves a good life - get good high-paying jobs, inherit parents’ fortune, and the “virtuous” cycle repeats.

I’ve said before that it takes luck and a lot more hard work for the poorer students to catch up.

But what are the options? Suppose they are not smart and lucky enough to get into an elite school. What should they do?

These are my suggestions:

Go to a polytechnic for your tertiary education. Less stress there, and you learn practical skills.

Work for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Yes, I know the standard advice from HR experts - one must try to get into an MNC, because your resume will look very nice. My argument here is that you can learn very different things in SMEs. Read on.

Learn as much as you can about the business in the company you’re working for. If possible, observe closely how the entire company works - sales, operations, logistics, human resource, accounting, finance, suppliers, vendors, etc. Because it’s an SME, it should not be too hard to know about almost everything about the business.

Mix with like-minded people in the company, people who are as hardworking, smart and ambitious as you are.

Save up.

Together with your like-minded friends, start your own business. Compete with your ex-bosses. (Now, if you think this is unethical, let me say that this is only as unethical as joining a competitor. If you think that is also unethical, I have nothing else to say.)

This is how many “tow-kays” got started.

If you had chosen the MNC path, do you think it’s as easy to start a business? What you would learn in MNCs are corporate things that won’t help you start a business. Your experience in an SME should help make the learning curve much less steep.

You can’t start an MNC, but you can definitely start an SME.

Work hard, work smart, and with a bit of luck maybe you’d be a millionaire in your 30s - as rich as an investment banker.

Now, do you agree with the writer? I do. As discussed with him over MSN, one of the reason I mentioned was that the average and poor is they dare not dream. Whereas for the rich, they often mixed around with their family's relative, business friends etc where they get to know and learn how the rich talk, behave and slowly learn from them. They have already inculcated in them the postive side of starting a business and that it is possible to be as successful as them! Opportunity like this does not arise easily for the common. Hence, they dare not even dream or think of starting a business, fearing of failure.

Now, another problem which we agreed was people started planning for their life too late. He proposed a plan to a few of his close friends that he will pool a sum of money together with them to buy properties. All of his friends' replies was negative and even stated that they would put the money in the bank instead. This same mentality applies to my side here too. If you belongs to this group of people, what I suggest is to get yourself a copy of "Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki. Its nothing than an inspirational book to get you started.

Next, I mentioned this "dream" of mine to him. To find a few like-minded people like us, who want to break free from the rat race, to be financially independent, get together to brainstorm for ideas to make money. Everyday when I walk down the street, I realised that there are many money making opportunities, however, most are out of my reach and I do not have the motivation to do it. So, if you are like me, perhaps we could get together and work things out. Because I believe that one needs to let his idea been known in order to get the motivation and discipline going.

Comments are welcome.

Adult EZ-link fares for buses up from October

No Comment - Post a comment

SINGAPORE: Adult EZ-link fares for buses will increase by between one and two cents from 1 October.

Senior citizen concessionary EZ-link bus fares, which are flat fares pegged to the lowest adult fare band, will go up by two cents.

But the Public Transport Council (PTC) has decided there will be no increase in train fares.

After deliberating on their proposals, it approved an overall fare increase of 1.8 per cent for bus fares, but no increase for rail fares this year.

The government and the public transport operators SMRT Corporation and SBS Transit have set aside S$3 million in public transport vouchers to help needy families cope with the latest fare increase.

Its Friday!

No Comment - Post a comment

Its finally Friday, am eagerly looking forward to Saturday as I dedicated 1 day off entirely from my school work to go dating with my dear lol.

Its 6.38pm here in my hostel. I will be staying here overnight to finish up my 3 tutorials due next Monday so that I can sacrifice my Saturday. Its worth it.

Anyway, today was really a typical Singapore weather. Due to the alternating weeks of lab session on Friday morning, I have the luxury of sleeping till 11am as my next lesson was at 2.30pm. However (this word again), I woke up around 9am. Not because I had enough of sleep but something is disturbing me from my sleep. Yes if you are living in the west, you would have also felt the hot burning sun this morning. My face was practically sun-tanning while I was sleeping, part of my leg too. Knowing that my windows are facing the east, I turn down my windows blind the night before. To my alarm, just to the side of the windows, there was another small window pane without blind that the sun was happily shining through it and to my face. argh!!!

Then I went to my lecture at 2.30pm. An hour later when I stepped out of the lecture, it was raining outside. I went to my next lecture, the moment I stepped inside, I could felt the coldness immediately after the first breath of air that went into my nose. After the lecture, the rain stopped.

My friend drove his laobei car to school today as his dad went overseas. The car is a Honda Odyssey. It looks really big and long inside and surprisely did have some reasonable amount of horses inside the engine. And while I am blogging now, it started to rain here. Tian You Bu Ce Zi Feng You which means the weather is unpredicted.

*yawn* gonna take a short nap first before I start my engine for tonight.
